I vow to help you love life, to always hold you with tenderness and to have the patience that love demands, to speak when words are needed and to share the silence when they are not and to live within the warmth of your heart and always call it home.

McGouzburg Trip: Munich, Germany

Guten Morgen Germany!

Doner Kabob lunch in Munich

After a quick 2 hour flight, we landed in Munich!  Here we met up with another traveler and friend, Kyle.

Day 1:

We took a train from the airport to the train station, then it was only a 2 minute walk to our hostel from there.  We highly recommend the Wombat Hostel in Munich.  Great location, spacious rooms with lockers, hearty breakfast in the morning and cheap bar specials at night.  After we met up with Kyle, we hit the town for some exploring!

Entering the "old town"

Munich's new city hall

Marienplatz, the city's central square

He always photo bombs me!

Next we climbed to the top of St Peter's Church for a wonderful view of Munich.  This is the oldest church is Munich.  In WWII everything was destroyed except for the altar.  They sandbagged it enough to preserve it through the raids.

Inside St Peter's

Heading up the bell tower, a little cramped!

The view was spectacular.

Next we followed Rick Steves walking tour of the old town.

Hey Kaiser!

No kids allowed! She loved that.

They're perverts in Munich.

Frauenkirche Church

Out front of the church they had these pedal-stool things, so of course we had to climb on them.

Inside Frauenkirche
This church (also called the Cathedral of our Dear Lady) is significant to Munich because it's the seat of the Archbishop.  Also Munich has a building code that no other building in the city can exceed the height of this church's domes (99m).  Pretty cool!

Say a prayer in the "Cathedral of Our Dear Lady".

A green square in the middle of the city

Hofbrauhaus!

Hofbrauhaus!
We had been warned that this was a tourist trap, but we had to be trapped at least once!  Can't come to Munich and not visit this beer hall.

Upstairs hall

These poor bar wenches had it rough carrying these heavy steins!

Inside the main hall downstairs

Prost!

Drinking fresh brew in HB, Munich! So surreal.

They loved it!

We went back to our hostel to unpack and we had the pleasure of rooming with the oldest back packer in Europe, Keith Case.  Of course we had to google him and it's true!  He's across Europe.  He never had to pay for a drink the entire time because the hostel staff had all his beer on the house.  He's from Australia and he was in the midst of his goodbye tour, as he called it.  He said he's made so many friends along the way during all his travels that at his age he thought it was time to start saying farewell.

""Memories are something no one can take away, but only you can make. Except Alzheimer's, it could take them away."

Our bunks

Our room was huge!

Day 2:

We decided to take a bus tour to see the Eagle's Nest!  This is a site my husband has wanted to see for years and I was all for it after our visit to Normandy a few years ago.  There's so much history in Europe that it's a damn shame if you don't at least take a day here and there amist your travels to experience it.  These sites won't last forever.

They were still adjusting to Germany time!

The view as we drove through the countryside.

Once we reached the base camp, we had to take another smaller, specialized bus up to the actually site.  This road is only open six months out of the year because it's so steep the snow will make it impossible to ride up safely.

Then we had to walk into a tunnel carved into the mountain to get to Hitler's elevator up to his actually home.

Waiting on the elevator, so excited!

The view from Hitler's Eagle's Nest.

We took SO many pictures here, but it's hard not too when the view is this gorgeous.

Gazing out on this view

Hitler was spoiled.

Drinking at beer at Hitler's house

On our way back we stopped in at a little town, Bierschgarten

Day 3:

Another bus tour to see a couple Bavarian castles!  First stop, Linderhof Castle built in 1886.

Behind the castle

Side garden

We got to tour the inside, but no photos were allowed.

Next stop, Neuschwanstein also built in 1886.  This is the famous castle that inspired Disney. But first a lunch break and since we're on the cheap...canned europe ravioli!

Yummy and organic!

Needed gelato too

Neuschwanstein Castle

Hiking up to it

The castle gate! Photo bombed again :)

Again, once inside photos weren't allowed, boo!

View from the castle looking out at the seven lakes

Every night we went out and sampled all of Munich's six beers they're famous for and brewed here.  A buddy from work was stationed in Germany so he made us a map of the awesome, local, non-touristy beer halls in Munich.  How lucky are we!  We loved ALL his recommendations, thanks again Ben!

Kit's favorite! Aventinus

Again..bombed!

Day 4:

Explored St Micheal's Church

Hitler led a protest here before WWII, we saw a photo of him standing here exactly here.

WWII Memorial

Gardens

I love how the cafe angles their chairs for prime people watching

Extra Gross!

Lunch at the huge Biergarten in town

It was Shawn's last day, so we wanted to hit a concentration camp.  We visited the first concentration camp in Germany, Dachau Concentration Camp.  It was built in 1933 and liberated by US forces in 1945.  We spent four hours here, until they closed, and it wasn't enough.  If you plan to visit this site please allow for at least six hours.  It's worth it.

The entrance

"Work will set you free."

They preserved all the old buildings and use them to house the museum.

A photo of Hitler's protest in Munich.

Bathes

Bunks

Crematorium and where they would hang prisoners
The "Showers"

Shower room/gas chamber

Left and right was where the old bunk houses used to be

May the example of those who were exterminated here between 1933-1945, because they resisted nazism help unite the living for the defense of peace and freedom in the respect for their fellow men.

Last minute photos with Shawn!

We'll miss you!

Day 5:

We decided to rent bikes and tour the English Gardens/Munich!  It was a little scary at first but we all got the hang of it quick and had no accidents!

Whole chicken and pork knuckle for lunch!

Surfers surfed the city river!

Kit wore the GoPro for the bike ride

We loved Germany!  We're definitely going back one day for Oktoberfest and to hit more sites.  We really loved the beer hall culture of this place.

Next stop, Luxembourg!
